WADO TECHNIQUES

 DIRECTIONS AND LEVELS

  • Mae-front

  • Ushiro-back

  • Hidari-left

  • Migi-right

  • Age-rising

  • Otoshi-dropping

  • Soto-outward

  • Mawashi-round

  • Jodan-high; above the shoulders; generally the chin

  • Chudan-middle; shoulders to waist; generally solar plexus

  • Gedan-low; below the waist; generally groin or knee area

 TAISABAKI-BODY MOVEMENT

  • Ayumiashi-walking one step forward or backward

  • Surikomi-two steps forward or backward

  • Yoriashi-”leap” moving front foot first

  • Kaiten-turning in various directions

  • Kagami-ducking

  • Chidoriashi-”drunk foot” as in step across in Naihanchi kata

TERMINOLOGY

  • Ashi- foot

  • Sokuto- knife or outside edge of foot

  • Haisoku- instep

  • Kakato- heel

  • Chusoku- sole of foot

  • Sune- shin

  • Hiza- knee

TACHIKATA-STANCES

  • Shizentai-natural stances

  • Heisokudachi- closed toes stance; toes and heels touching

  • Musubidachi- attention stance; heels touching, toes at 45 degrees apart

  • Shizenhontai- natural main stance

  • Migishizentai- right natural stance

  • Hidarishizentai- left natural stance

UNEVEN STANCES

  • Zenkutsudachi- front knee is bent as in junzuki

  • Kokutsudachi- back knee is bent as in mahamni no neko ashi (cat stance)

 EVEN STANCES

  • Kibadachi- horse stance; feet parallel

  • Shikodachi- horse stance; feet outward

  • Naihanchidachi- feet and knees inwards

  • Seishandachi- stance found in Seishan kata; feet parallel to attack line; heel to toe length

  • Tate seishan-feet parallel to attack line; heel to toe width

OTHER STANCES FOUND IN KATA

  • Kosadachi- cross stance

  • Sagiadachi- one legged stance as in Chinto kata

 UKEWAZA-BLOCKING TECHNIQUES

  • Jodanuke- high block

  • Gedanbarai- low block

  • Sotouke- outward arm block

  • Uchiuke- inward arm block

  • Sukuiuke- scooping block

  • Otoshiuke- dropping block

  • Shutouke- knife hand block

  • Mawashiuke- round block

  • Kakeuke- hook block

  • Osaeuke- press block

  • Jujiuke- x block

TSUKIWAZA-PUNCHING TECHNIQUES

  • Junzuki- front hand punch

  • Gyakuzuki- back hand punch

  • Junzuki-no-tsukomi- front hand leaning punch

  • Gyakuzuki-no-tsukomi- back hand leaning punch

MORE TERMS

  • Tatezuki- vertical fist

  • Urazuki- inverted fist

  • Heikozuki- parallel punch as in passai kata

  • Hasamizuki- scissors punch as in double hook punch in various kata

OTHER STRIKES INCLUDE:

  • Shuto tatemawashiuchi- vertical swing, i.e. to collar bone

  • Toho-strike with web between index finger and thumb

  • Maegeri- front kick

  • Fumikomi- stamping
